Learn Dutch your way!

Dutch language courses to learn Basic Dutch

Learning Dutch can be demanding, which is why we focus not only on teaching you the basics in Dutch but also on how to learn a new language in an efficient way. Using the newest evidence-based teaching methods and teaching you also how to use (and not to use) digital devices and applications such as AI when learning Dutch.

Our Eindhoven-based lessons will make you feel confident in learning and speaking Dutch. We call it your personal ‘new language learning zone’. You will get used to ‘feeling comfortable with the uncomfortable’. Yes, this is a thing when learning a new language, speaking with and listening to your Dutch neighbours, sports teammates, colleagues or just with people in daily life.

What can I say after the Basic Dutch course?

You will be able to among other things: introduce someone and yourself, spell, say how you are doing, talk about hobbies, invite someone, talk about your family and daily activities, tell the time, make an appointment, ask for a product in the supermarket, ask about public transport, order in a restaurant, talk about food and drinks, clothing.

Are digital tools and AI helpful when learning Dutch?

We will also look at why and how AI and digital tools can add value to your language learning. And also what to avoid. Apps and websites give a lot of promises to learn a language. AI like ChatGPT, Gemini or Google Translate can be fun and feel helpful but you have to be an expert in AI, a native Dutch speaker and teacher of Dutch as a second language to be able to decide whether an AI output is correct and helps you to speak and learn Dutch.

So technology is supportive when used in the right way but communication requires interaction between people. This is much more than bringing a message across from one person to another. It is about social interaction, multicultural communication and intercultural competence, learning how to deal with stress and much more. At Empower Dutch Learning we bring this to the classroom.

Are you a top scorer on DuoLingo or a language app for learning Dutch but in the meantime you find yourself talking English again to this Dutch person who easily switches over to English?

Learning a new language nowadays requires more discipline than ever before. Just like your weekly visit to the gym or your favourite sporting activity you have to practise regularly and in the right way. Apps like these help a lot because motivation for learning only comes after you can bring up the required discipline to pick yourself up each time and just do it. Your brain needs resistance, challenge and repetition when learning a new language. Not too much and not too little. That’s the right spot in your learning zone.

And becoming really comfortably fluent requires additional different practice and knowledge on how to learn Dutch. That’s where a language teacher needs to step in. A teacher of Dutch as a second language (NT2-teacher) will help you to understand your personal learning zone. You will work towards the Dutch CEFR A1-level with extra focus on pronunciation and conversation.

What else do I learn apart from learning Dutch Beginners level (A1)?

After this training you will have the basic Dutch and the knowledge and skills  to continue learning and practise Dutch in your personal learning zone and how to practise Dutch outside of the classroom in a sustainable way, what learning strategies to use and when not to use digital technology. You will know what realistic goals to set and feel confident when learning.
